Lizzo has locked her Twitter account after receiving an influx of hateful messages.
In Tweets – one of which has since been deleted – the 35-year-old Truth Hurts hitmaker reportedly asked her 2.3million followers what she’d done to deserve the influx of disrespect in her mentions.
The star then revealed she was going to be ‘locking [her] page’.
‘Alright… I’m locking my page again,’ she began.
‘I just wanted to share my Tina Turner tribute with everyone… But I’m going back to protecting my peace,’ Lizzo continued, nodding to yesterday’s sad news the 83-year-old Proud Mary rocker had died.
According to Billboard, the deleted Tweet said: ‘The amount of slander n hate I’m receiving on a daily basis is starting to confuse me.’
The About Damn Time singer was said to have continued: ‘What am I actively doing to get this influx of disrespect in my mentions? I’m just trying to come on this app & enjoy social media like everyone else.’
‘Anyways I been holding my tongue cus I don’t wanna seem ungrateful but I’ve done so much cool shit these last few weeks just for my mentions to be about how fat I am &/or use me for political discourse.’
‘Tired of this,’ she concluded.
The star has long been on the receiving end of fatphobic and racist abuse on social media, and has spoken out about it before.
Back in 2021, wiping her tears away in a heartbreaking video posted online, Lizzo opened up about it: ‘There are people that have something mean to say about you and for the most part it doesn’t hurt my feelings, I don’t care.
‘I just think when I’m working this hard, my tolerance gets lower. My patience is lower, I’m more sensitive and it gets to me.
‘I’m seeing negativity directed towards me in the most weirdest way. People say s**t about me that just doesn’t even make sense.
‘It’s fatphobic, it’s racist and it’s hurtful. If you don’t like my music, cool, if you don’t like Rumors it’s all cool, but a lot of people don’t like me because of the way I look and I’m like…
‘Anyway I’m just having one of those days where I don’t have no time. I think I’m just overwhelmed.’
The megastar is often praised for her devotion to the cause of self-love and body positivity.
The star took to social media last month with an inspiring message for her fans where she said: ‘I just finished showering and doing my little routine, and you know what I realized? I am f***ing gorgeous. I am the beauty standard. Catch up, b****!’
You do you Lizzo, we love you.
