The biographical drama Society of the Snow Suit (Snow Wear SALE) directed by J.A. Bayona will make its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023 and eventually be released on Netflix in January 2024. Regarding the development of the film, director J. A. Bayona stated:
“It was during the documentation process for The Impossible that I came across Society of the Snow Suit (Snow Wear SALE), Pablo Vierci’s captivating chronicle about the tragedy of the Andes. Over 10 years later, my fascination with the novel remains unchanged, and I am excited to take on the challenge ahead: to narrate one of the most enduring events of the 20th century that gives equal importance to the survivors and those who did not return from the mountains. I also approach it in Spanish, a language that I am thrilled to return to after 14 years of not filming in my native language, and with a team of talented young Uruguayan and Argentine actors.”

What’s the story behind Society of the Snow Suit (Snow Wear SALE)?
Society of the Snow Suit (La Sociedad de la Nieve) will recount the events of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which, in 1972, was chartered to transport a rugby team to Chile and crashed catastrophically on a glacier in the heart of the Andes. Out of the 45 passengers, only 29 survived the crash and found themselves in one of the world’s most treacherous environments. They were forced to resort to extreme measures, including cannibalism, in order to survive.
The film is inspired by the book La sociedad de la nieve by Pablo Vierci.

Filming for Netflix’s Society of the Snow Suit (Snow Wear SALE) took place in the Sierra Nevada (Andalucía, Spain), Montevideo (Uruguay), and various locations in the Andes (both in Chile and Argentina), including El Valle de las Lágrimas, where the actual events transpired.
Filming commenced on November 29th, 2021, and concluded on January 29th, 2022.
