A worrying prediction has been made by Graeme Souness regarding the future of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool.
Although the Premier League transfer window has closed, Saudi Arabia Pro League clubs can still acquire players until at least September 7. Despite Liverpool rejecting an initial offer from Al-Ittihad for approximately £150 million, the club remains undeterred and determined to secure Salah’s services.
Jurgen Klopp, in a press conference before Sunday’s match against Aston Villa, confidently stated that Salah is fully committed to Liverpool and will remain with the club. However, former Liverpool captain Souness believes that the club is fighting a losing battle. He argues that the economic factor will play a significant role in Salah’s potential move to ambitious Al-Ittihad, as they have no financial constraints.
Souness expressed his concerns to the Daily Mail, saying, “I fear Liverpool will lose Mo Salah to Saudi Arabia. I genuinely believe that he will make the move in the six days remaining before the Saudi transfer window closes. Being Egyptian and a Muslim, he would be heading to the birthplace of Islam and a country that shares a maritime border with his own. Additionally, there’s the allure of the lucrative offer. This is not a case of being offered a mere 10 or 20 percent increase in his current salary. Salah can demand whatever he wants, and the Saudis will offer it to him, as he is the player they covet above all others.”
He then elaborated on the situation, mentioning the treacherous decision Liverpool faces. Souness warned that without considering Klopp’s wishes, Liverpool is entering dangerous territory. He emphasized that Salah is showing interest in joining Al-Ittihad, which could be distressing for the majority of Liverpool fans. However, Souness noted that this development is indicative of what the Premier League could face in the future, as Saudi Arabia has had a sustained presence within various aspects of British society, including football, over the past five decades.
While Salah may ultimately choose to stay at Liverpool, Souness expressed doubt regarding his long-term future at the club, saying, “I hope he stays for the sake of Klopp’s team this season. However, if I were a betting man, I would wager that he won’t remain a Liverpool player for much longer.”
