In the 2021 NFL Draft, the Dolphins were relinquished three first-round picks by the 49ers in exchange for selecting QB Trey Lance. San Francisco took a substantial risk, but it hasn’t yielded positive results for them so far.
Over the weekend, the Dallas Cowboys traded for Trey Lance, and for the past seven seasons, Dak Prescott has served as the starting QB for the team. However, his performance in the last two seasons hasn’t been exceptional, which has raised speculation about the possibility of his job being up for grabs after this season, given his age of 30. Could the acquisition of Trey Lance be a hint at what’s to come for Dak Presscott’s tenure with the Cowboys?
Is Trey Lance being provided with an opportunity to become a starting QB in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys?
Sooner or later, Dak Prescott will come to realize that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have never been fond of him – they desired Paxton Lynch, they still miss Romo, Jerry himself claimed to have overpaid Dak, and half of the Cowboys’ fanbase despises him. Moreover, why acquire Trey Lance when they already have Cooper Rush as a backup QB? SMH.
Last season, Dak Prescott participated in 12 games for the Dallas Cowboys, resulting in 8 wins and 4 losses. In 2022, he and Texans’ backup QB Davis Mills both threw the most interceptions (15) in a single season. At this stage of his career, the Cowboys are well-aware of Dak Prescott’s capabilities. Although he has led the Cowboys to the postseason four times as the starting QB, they have only advanced past the second round on two occasions. In six playoff games throughout his career, the Pro Bowler has a record of 2 wins and 4 losses. If Prescott has another average season in 2023, his time with the Cowboys could be limited. Cooper Rush currently serves as the team’s second-string QB, and now, after the trade with the 49ers, Trey Lance has joined the team as well.
Ryan Clark reacts to the Cowboys’ acquisition of Trey Lance.
Trey Lance had two opportunities to be the starting QB for the 49ers, but injuries prevented him from taking the field. In his rookie season in 2021, Lance was active for six games and started in two of them. Last season, he started in Week 1 but could only be active for the first two games due to injuries. Now, Lance is a member of the Cowboys and has the potential to be their future QB in due course. At the age of 23, Lance still has time to serve as a backup and learn from experienced QBs ahead of him in the roster. The Cowboys took a risk, knowing that there’s no guarantee of Lance’s future success, but they only had to give up a fourth-round pick. At the end of the season, the Cowboys will have an opportunity to decide whether or not to exercise Lance’s fifth-year option.
