A woman has vanished in submerged caverns in Egypt after engaging in a dive deemed ‘too deep’ to a depth of 400ft with her spouse.
Kristina and Yuri Osipovi, hailing from St Petersburg, Russia, were part of a tourist group embarking on an expedition around Giftun Island, located south of the Hurghada resort.
Apparently, the couple had already descended to a depth of 120ft when they decided to venture further, ‘without any specialized gear’.
Yuri, aged 41, aborted his dive after experiencing a loss of consciousness and resurfaced. However, his wife was nowhere to be seen.
A search operation is currently underway for the mother of four, with the search area being expanded. Unfortunately, rescue teams are growing pessimistic about their chances of discovering her.
Russian Consulate General diplomat Alexei Zhilyaev stated: ‘After the husband ascended, the dive computer indicated a maximum depth of 400ft, which is the depth at which they were both unconscious.
‘When her husband surfaced and regained consciousness, his wife was not present.’
Mustafa Nabil, the commander of the rescue ship, told REN TV that if the woman had been carried away by a fierce underwater current, her body might not be recovered.
‘Her husband mentioned that he began to lose consciousness, a phenomenon known as nitrogen narcosis, which induces a state of intoxication in divers,’ Nabil stated.
However, the man managed to swim away, while Kristina remained in the water.
