Liverpool Women are set to bolster their attacking strength by securing the services of Hinata Miyazawa, the winner of the Women’s World Cup Golden Boot, for their squad. Last season, the Reds finished in seventh place in the WSL, and their manager Matt Beard aims to build on that achievement in the upcoming campaign.
Reports from Japan suggest that Liverpool Women have already added six new players to their squad this summer, with another one potentially joining soon. According to Nikkan Sports, Miyazawa is on her way to Liverpool, eager to capitalize on the momentum from the World Cup and advance her career. During the World Cup, Miyazawa represented Japan in all five of their matches, starting in four of them and scoring five goals before the team was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
At just 23 years old, Miyazawa is the youngest player to win the Women’s World Cup Golden Boot since 2007. This accolade, after scoring five goals in five games, highlights her exceptional talent. Liverpool Women will undoubtedly welcome her firepower as they scored the fourth fewest goals among the 12 clubs in the previous league season, with just 24 goals.
Before leaving Tokyo airport, Miyazawa spoke to Nikkan Sports, stating, “This is just the beginning for me, and I want to move to a place where I can develop and grow. My focus is on that goal. I aspire to be a player who is adored and supported by many. I want to become a renowned player worldwide.” Additionally, Miyazawa will be greeted by a familiar face at Liverpool, as her compatriot Fuka Nagano has already settled in nicely since joining the club in January.
While rumors link Liverpool Women to Roma forward Sophie Roman Haug, the team has already signed two new forwards this summer: Natasha Flint and Mia Enderby. Furthermore, changes are occurring not only on the pitch but also off it, as work progresses to transform Melwood into their new training ground, which is expected to be completed shortly.
These positive steps forward indicate progress for the Reds, who recently faced a penalty shootout defeat against PSG in the semi-final of the AMOS Women’s French Cup during their pre-season preparations. Liverpool Women will commence their league season on October 1, facing Arsenal at the Emirates.
