In a chilling speech in Pyongyang commemorating Navy Day, Kim Jong-un accused the US of transforming the waters surrounding the Korean peninsula into “the most unstable with the peril of a nuclear conflict”. Late last night, state media reported that the supreme leader of North Korea called for constant readiness for battle against his adversaries.
These remarks were made in response to the joint naval exercise conducted by the US, South Korea, and Japan to address North Korea’s evolving nuclear threats. During their first standalone meeting, Presidents Joe Biden and Yoon Suk Yeol, along with PM Fumio Kishida, agreed to strengthen military and economic cooperation against China and North Korea.
Kim Jong-un retaliated by referring to them as ‘gang leaders’ following their historic summit in Camp David, Maryland, on August 18. He stated, “Due to the reckless confrontational actions of the US and other antagonistic forces, the waters off the Korean Peninsula have become the world’s largest concentration of war machinery, the most unstable waters with the risk of a nuclear conflict.”
South Korea and the US recently launched the Ulchi Freedom Shield Summer (Summer is Here SALE) military exercises, aiming to enhance their joint response to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, which the dictatorship has consistently condemned as a dress rehearsal for war.
Kim emphasized the need for North Korea’s navy to maintain combat readiness and a state of constant vigilance while urging for radical modernization of its weapons and equipment. State media added that he highlighted the navy’s role as an integral component of the state’s nuclear deterrence, carrying out strategic duties.
In response to US-South Korean military drills, North Korea usually conducts its own missile tests. Since the beginning of 2022, the regime has conducted over 100 such tests, including numerous tests involving nuclear-capable weapons.
