Marc Cucurella ‘very close’ to joining Manchester United

Manchester United are ‘very close’ to sealing a move for Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella, according to reports in Spain.

The left-back joined Chelsea in a £62m deal in 2022 from Brighton but he endured a nightmare debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Cucurella is yet to start a competitive fixture under Mauricio Pochettino and he’s behind Ben Chilwell in the pecking order.

Following injury to Luke Shaw, United have quickly scoured the market for emergency options at left-back.

The England international is set for two months on the sidelines and his absence comes at the worst possible time, with Tyrell Malacia also injured.

United made an informal approach for Cucurella on Saturday and Marca say the Spaniard is now close to completing a loan switch to Old Trafford.

Chelsea are likely to demand an upfront fee, plus full covering of Cucurella’s wages in order for him to move to the north-west.

The defender is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford following a frustrating 12 months in west London.

It comes after United made a formal loan offer for former Chelsea ace Marcos Alonso.

The Barcelona full-back had been identified as a target given he has just a year left on his deal at the Camp Nou.

But, at seven years Alonso’s junior, Cucurella is deemed a better option.
