The mother of a six-year-old student who shot his teacher has been charged with federal gun and drug crimes.
Deja Taylor’s son shot and wounded his first grade teacher Abby Zwerner at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia on January 6.
Taylor, 25, was charged on Monday with making a false statement while purchasing a firearm and unlawfully using a controlled substance in possession of a firearm.
Prosecutors allege that she lied about using marijuana while buying a Taurus 9mm handgun last year.
‘In fact as she then knew, she was an unlawful user of marijuana,’ state federal charging documents.
Taylor will plead guilty to the charges, her attorney Jimmy Ellenson told WTKR. Terms of the plea deal will likely be revealed in the next two weeks, he said.
Her son will not be charged, prosecutors said.
Taylor was indicted by a Newport News grand jury in April on charges of felony child neglect and recklessly leaving a loaded weapon endangering a child, which is a misdemeanor count.
The mother has apologized to Zwerner and claimed responsibility for her son accessing the gun, though she said she did not know how he got his hands on it.
Taylor’s trial is slated to start on August 15.
