The trailer for the fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel has dropped and sees Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) more determined than ever to make it big on the comedy circuit.
The housewife-turned-comic has experienced her fair share of highs and lows so far, building her career from the ground up again last season after being unceremoniously dumped as a support act on singer Shy Baldwin’s tour for a near-the-knuckle joke.
Clawing her way back up the greasy showbiz totem pole, Midge finished up season four declaring she was done being a support act.
And now, it seems that she is sticking to her guns ahead of the April 14 premiere date on Prime Video for the Emmy-winning show.
However, although the immaculately fashionable Midge finds herself closer than ever to the success she’s dreamed of, she’s discovering that closer than ever is still so far away.
‘I want a big life, I want to break every single rule there is,’ she says in the trailer voiceover as she’s seen plugging away on the live circuit, with her name high on the bill, after gazing longingly at a billboard advert for The Gordon Ford Show.
‘It’s two steps forward, three steps aback and I’m tired of it,’ she later vents to manager Susie (Alex Borstein), frustration never far from the surface.
‘This is it, this is the break,’ Susie assures her in reply as they talk backstage on a TV set.
It certainly seems that it could be the case, with a ‘busy, professional’ office expansion for Susie Myerson and Associates with all manner of new clients and creatures visiting (including a llama, naturally).
Midge’s eccentric parents, played by Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle, don’t seem to be having such a good time of things, with evidence of a burnt-out apartment building as Shalhoub’s Abe laments: ‘We seem to be experiencing very bad luck.’
There’s also glimpses of Midge’s ex-husband and co-parent Joel (Michael Zegen), and Milo Ventimiglia, who is back to reprise his unnamed cameo role of Midge’s one-morning stand last season.
Although not glimpsed in the trailer, fan favourite Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby) is also back as an almost-love interest for Midge, and a real-life tragic comedy figure with unwavering belief in her.
