Albert Sambi Lokonga has thanks Patrick Vieira for helping him to enjoy his football again following the Arsenal legend’s sacking.
Lokonga joined the Eagles in January on loan having struggled to win the faith of Mikel Arteta who replaced the Belgium international with the signing of the experienced Jorginho on deadline day.
Much was expected of the gifted midfielder when he joined from Anderlecht in a £17million deal 18 months ago, but he failed to convince on the occasions he was asked to stand-in for Thomas Partey.
Under the tutelage of Vieira, Lokonga began to suggest he may have a future in the Premier League but their relationship was brought to an abrupt end on Friday after Vieira’s sudden dismissal.
Taking to Instagram to thank his now former manager, Lokonga wrote: ‘Thank you for giving me back the smile during this short period of time. See you soon coach!’
Vieira was given his marching orders less than 48 hours after Wednesday’s defeat at arch rivals Brighton which saw Palace’s winless run extend to 12 matches.
Paddy McCarthy will take charge of the team against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday but the Eagles could yet turn to former boss Roy Hodgson in an interim capacity for the run-in.
‘It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made,’ said Palace chairman Steve Parrish on Friday.
‘Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status.
‘That said, Patrick’s impact since joining us in the summer of 2021 has been significant, and he is held in the highest regard by myself, and all of his colleagues.
