Emily Ratajkowski has opened up on the effort it took for her to leave her marriage after giving birth to her first child.
The model, 31, first shot to fame when she appeared in Robin Thicke’s controversial music video for track Blurred Lines, and has gone on to build a stellar career.
Now successful as an actress, author and podcast host, Emily was married for four years to film producer Sebastian Bear-McClard, 41, and the pair welcomed a son, Sylvester, together.
However Emily and Sebastian split when Sylvester – now two – was approaching his first birthday, and the model is believed to have filed for divorce in recent months.
Unverified split rumours began when Emily was seen without her wedding ring, and a source later claimed to Page Six that Sebastian was ‘a serial cheater.’
The Gone Girl actress has since been briefly linked to comedians Pete Davidson and, more recently, Eric Andre, though she has indicated they are no longer dating.
Emily has now reflected on the end of her marriage to Sebastian as she admits her desire for a family unit led her to stay in the relationship for longer than she should have.
Appearing on the Going Mental With Eileen Kelly podcast, Emily said she ‘didn’t have the courage to leave for a long time.
‘I was really, really unhappy. I was, like, 100lbs and I had just had a baby. I got really skinny because I was not OK.’
She revealed she tried antidepressants and was ‘sure that something was wrong with me,’ adding that one of the biggest things she learned with the ending of her marriage was to ‘trust your instincts.’
‘Gaslighting is a real thing,’ she declared.
Emily suggested part of the reason she stayed was the fact that women and girls are told ‘from the second we are born’ that they should find a partner ‘that completes you.’
‘I do think that was part of it, plus I had just had a child, so I really wanted to have that family, so it was especially hard for me to totally walk away.’
