Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff were disappointed with Manchester United after Carabao Cup final victory, reveals Gary Neville
Gary Neville has revealed a Manchester United coach expressed his ‘disappointment’ at the side’s performance after the Carabao Cup final victory against Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Red Devils ended their six-year trophy drought with a comfortable 2-0 win against the Magpies at Wembley.
Casemiro opened the scoring somewhat against the run of play, before Marcus Rashford effectively sealed the win a few minutes later via a deflected effort.
United were far from their best but Newcastle barely laid a glove on them at Wembley, with Erik ten Hag bringing on the likes of Marcel Sabitzer and Scott McTominay in the closing stages to see out the win.
The victory came less than 72 hours after the win against Barcelona at Old Trafford in a Europa League play-off and United have been playing roughly every three days for the last two months.
Nevertheless, there’s been no slackening of standards among Ten Hag’s backroom team, with one coach revealing to Neville that he was far from happy with the display.
‘I thought it was probably as good as a cup final performance that you could wish to get at Wembley,’ Neville told the Overlap.
‘I spoke to one of the United coaches at the end of the game and they were actually disappointed with the fact that they didn’t play that you would expect them to play but I just think; how many brilliant performances do you get at Wembley?
‘I played there a lot of times with England, I played there with United and the occasion you just don’t see free-flowing football. It brings more nerves and both teams are prepared like you wouldn’t believe.
‘But for [Ten Hag] to control it in that way, to show the experience that they did, I thought it was an unbelievable performance.’
