Ariana DeBose makes light of viral Bafta rap as she returns to stage at SAG Awards 2023
Ariana DeBose made light of her Baftas viral rap while appearing on stage at the SAG Awards 2023.
The West Side Story star caused a massive stir when she performed the opening number at the annual ceremony earlier this month, name-dropping every female nominee who was up for a gong.
In one particularly meme-worthy moment, the 32-year-old shouted out Angela Bassett, simply stating that she ‘did the thing’.
Side note: She’s not wrong as the Black Panther actress has indeed done many things.
Taking to the stage to present the outstanding performance by a female director in a drama series on Sunday, Ariana poked fun at the comment.
Directing her attention to co-presenter Diego Luna, she simply said: ‘Diego, do the thing.’
The quip was met by laughter from the audience as the camera panned across to Angela, who blew her a kiss from her seat.
Fans were living for the joke, and praised the Oscar-winner for taking the reaction in her stride like a total pro.
Discussing the footage on Twitter, one penned: ‘My baby did nothing wrong. Happy to see her owning it.’
‘She really made this film awards season hers and I’m living,’ a follower agreed.
Another said: ‘I like that she’s leaning into it, a good sport.’
‘She’s an icon, she’s a legend, and she IS the moment,’ a Twitter user praised.
As a commenter added: ‘I love her for this! That whole BAFTAs moment is the gift that keeps on giving! #SAGAwards.’
Many were left baffled by Ariana’s initial performance, leading to her taking a brief break from social media.
However, she got the seal of approval from Angela, who made sure to check on her pal after the attention she received.
‘I DM’d her last night. I did. It was beautiful,’ she told Variety at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday. ‘I just wanted to make sure she was okay because it’s a lot of attention. And she is A-Okay.’
