Michael Owen compares Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba
Michael Owen thinks Darwin Nunez can follow the career path of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, saying the Liverpool striker is raw but has the attributes to be world class.
The Uruguayan scored a superb opener for the Reds against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night, producing a clever finish to put the home side ahead at Anfield.
Things went pretty disastrously wrong for Liverpool as they went on to lose 5-2, but that took nothing away from the 23-year-old’s goal, his fourth in the Champions League since moving to England.
Owen still thinks Nunez has a long way to go and will need a lot of developing, admitting his surprise that he appears under-coached for a £64m signing, but can see there is unlimited potential in the forward.
‘He’s raw. I didn’t think he’d be this raw when he came to Liverpool,’ Owen told BT Sport. ‘Paying that money…when I watched him here in the Champions League last year I thought he was absolutely brilliant and he does things that take your breath away.
‘But he is going to have to be coached to be a top player. The player I’d liken him to, not in the same style, but when Didier Drogba came to these shores, people laughed at him for the first year or so.
‘His touch was awful, he made a lot of mistakes, but he just got used to the game and I think this lad can be similar, I think he’s really, really raw, he’s going to take a lot of coaching. But he’s got the raw materials.’
