Dele Alli ‘doesn’t deserve to play’ at the moment, says Besiktas manager
Dele Alli has been told he ‘doesn’t deserve to play at the moment’ by his boss at Besiktas, as his loan spell in Turkey goes from bad to worse.
The 26-year-old is on a season-long loan from Everton and things are not going very well for him, with manager Senol Gunes unimpressed with the England international.
The midfielder had been playing before the World Cup break, but is out of the team now, playing just one minute of Besiktas’ four league games since the resumption and being left on the bench for a cup defeat to MKE Ankaragücü on Wednesday.
When asked about Dele after the game, Gunes was brutally honest, saying: ‘Dele Alli has had a good career. But he doesn’t deserve to play at the moment. The current situation has not met our expectations as a team.
‘We expect him to contribute to the team, but we think he cannot contribute at the moment. We will evaluate it with him and the club. We prepared for the matches with the players here.
‘We will make an evaluation by looking at these players in the match on Sunday. We will evaluate if there is a transfer. The transfer will be discussed in this month, as in all teams. I cannot answer this at the moment.
‘I wish success to MKE Ankaragücü. We had a trophy goal, we are sorry. It’s time for us to stand up. The race continues. We play a match every three days. My players did their best. We have a match on Sunday. The race continues. We are sad that we were eliminated.’
Gunes has expressed his disappointment with Dele already this season, saying in November: ‘Let’s not discuss Dele Alli as a player, but he is below expectations in terms of efficiency.’
He then substituted the former Tottenham star just 30 minutes into a cup game in December.
Dele remains on loan in Turkey for the rest of the season and then has another year on his Everton contract.
