What do Love Island contestants eat in the villa?

Winter Love Island 2023 is finally underway, with brand new host Maya Jama already stealing the show with an incredible entrance, and two new bombshells on their way tonight to stir things up.

But the show still has us begging one important question: What do the contestants eat during their time in the villa?

While we rarely see the contestants eating during their time on the show, this doesn’t mean that they don’t. After all, they’re potentially in there for eight weeks and we can imagine they’d get a little bit peckish in that time.

From having McFlurries ordered in to meals with producers, read on to find out what the Islanders have at their disposal when it comes to mealtimes.

What do Love Island contestants eat in the villa?

Every morning it is up to the Islanders to make their own breakfast and lunch, with the villa kitchen constantly being restocked with snacks and drinks so that contestants are never left hungry.

Love Island is back for 2023

Food such as bread, cereal and eggs (who can forget when Jamie made Camilla a birthday breakfast?) are stored in the kitchen for them to use when they like.

During dinner time, things really get interesting though, as the Islanders have a variety of different foods at their disposal.

A catering station is put up in the villa’s grounds, with chefs on standby to prepare food for the competitors as well as the entire production staff, which usually consists of salads and barbecued meats.

They even get a Sunday roast, as executive producer Mike Spencer revealed on Reddit: ‘They have a real mix of foods, everything from lovely fresh salads to roast dinners on a Sunday!

‘Even in the heat they still have a roast dinner.’

After his stint on the show in 2019, Anton Danyluk revealed producers had also been delivering them McDonald’s McFlurries on a weekly basis.

Speaking to Heat magazine he said: ‘We needed that. We really did. I think it was about once a week we were getting them.

‘I had a few chicken nuggets here and there.’

The 2017 Love Island winner, Amber Davies, said the contestants also get to choose off a menu that is given to them.

She told The Sun: ‘You get to eat a selection of food and it’s lovely food. You do get to choose what to eat, and it all comes in separate containers.’

Olivia Attwood – who came third with Chris Hughes in the 2017 series – said they often ate dinner with producers, who insist conversation is kept to a minimum.

‘When we have dinner, it’s like them telling us we need to clean the bedroom, that laundry day is tomorrow and asking us what we want for our breakfast the next day, all just things that make the house run smoothly,’ the also told The Sun.

For this year’s winter season, it has also been revealed that islanders will have access to ‘themed booze and ready meals.’

The reason we don’t get to see the contestants eat during their time on the show is simple, there simply isn’t time to show mealtimes on camera.

An ITV spokesperson explained: ‘Unfortunately we can’t show everything as we’re confined to a one-hour show each night!’

How much alcohol are the Islanders allowed?

Former contestant Liana Isadora Van-Riel, who was on the show in 2016, told The Sun: ‘You’re allowed one or two drinks a night, either wine or beer, no spirits.’

Despite this, producers have insisted there’s no set limit on alcohol but contestants aren’t allowed to get as drunk as they want.

They explained that they judge the amount of alcohol consumed ‘on a case-by-case basis’.

Producers told the Huffington Post: ‘We’re really careful they don’t have too much to drink. We’re responsible about it.’

Love Island airs on ITV2 every evening at 9pm other than on Saturdays.
