Transgender frontwoman of Scottish band declares she’s as ‘real as JK Rowling’ in new song defending trans rights
A Scottish band with a transgender frontwoman have released a new song which includes a callout of Harry Potter author JK Rowling.
Glasgow duo Comfort is fronted by trans woman Natalie, and their new track, Real Woman, sees her declare she is – as you may have guessed from the title – as real as any woman.
In the song, Natalie sings that she has ‘never had so much interest at what’s between my legs’ but jokes ‘I don’t blame them, I think I’m fit as well.’
The video sees the musician pretend to use a urinal while singing ‘I’m an adult human female,’ and she goes on to say ‘I’m as real as Rowling,’ referring to the author’s controversial comments about the transgender community.
At the same time, Natalie lifts up her top to reveal two photos of the 57-year-old covering her nipples.
The new track acts as the lead single from Comfort’s upcoming record Wha’s Bad Enough, due to be released in May.
Author Rowling has come under fire in recent years for her various contentious comments about the trans community, including criticising an article in 2020 that referred to ‘people who menstruate’, rather than women.
Last year, the writer attracted further backlash from the LGBTQ+ community when she backed a protest against the Gender Recognition Reform bill, describing it as ‘the biggest assault on the rights of Scottish women and girls’.
Rowling recently launched a new support service in Scotland for cis women who have experienced sexual violence or abuse, saying at the time she founded it ‘to provide what I believe is currently an unmet need for women in the Lothians area.’
‘As a survivor of sexual assault myself, I know how important it is that survivors have the option of women-centred and women-delivered care at such a vulnerable time.’
The launch came shortly before the Scottish government took their final vote on plans to reform the Gender Recognition Act, which would allow people to self-identify as their gender rather than go through a medical diagnosis.
The Bill – which Rowling vocally opposed – has since been blocked by Westminister.
Rowling’s views have received a mixed response from the stars of the Harry Potter film series, with leading man Daniel Radcliffe saying he wanted queer and trans young people to know ‘not everybody in the franchise felt that way.’
Emma Watson and Rupert Grint joined Radcliffe in speaking out in support of the trans community at the time, while Voldemort actor Ralph Fiennes slammed the abuse she has received.
Other stars linked to the Harry Potter franchise have also supported her, including Hagrid actor Robbie Coltrane, who died in September aged 72.
