Manchester United respond to West Ham’s Harry Maguire approach
Manchester United have no intention of loaning Harry Maguire to West Ham this month and Erik ten Hag still feels he has a big role to play this season, according to reports.
The Red Devils captain has fallen down the pecking order since the new manager took over and has only started one of United’s last four Premier League matches since the conclusion of the World Cup.
Maguire initially lost his place in the side to summer signing Lisandro Martinez but recently Ten Hag has been preferring to use Luke Shaw at left centre-back alongside Raphael Varane.
The 29-year-old is now effectively the fourth choice centre-back option and there had been suggestions the club might be prepared to cash in on him, especially with Victor Lindelof also among Ten Hag’s many options at the back.
Aston Villa were linked with an audacious swoop for the England international after he was spotted near their training ground, while West Ham have also been weighing up an approach.
Now BBC Sport are reporting that the Hammers did make contact with their United counterparts to explore the possibility of taking Maguire on loan until the end of the season.
Conscious of how successful a similar loan move for Jesse Lingard was a couple of years ago, West Ham thought United might be open to the possibility of doing the same with Maguire.
However, West Ham’s approach was given short shrift and they were informed there was ‘no chance’ of Maguire leaving this month.
With United still involved in three cup competitions, as well as potentially even contesting the Premier League title race, they do not want to compromise their squad depth.
Despite his lack of game time recently, Ten Hag still feels Maguire has a significant role to play at the club – both this season and beyond.
West Ham, meanwhile, have been hampered by an injury crisis at the back, with summer signing Nayef Aguerd restricted to just two starts for the club while Angelo Ogbonna has only made four appearances.
Manager David Moyes is keen to bring in reinforcements this month both in defence and attack, with Sevilla frontman Youssef En-Nesyri a long-time target.
