Chelsea and Manchester United join Tottenham in race to sign Brentford star David Raya

Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly joined Tottenham in the race to sign Brentford goalkeeper David Raya this summer.

All three Premier League giants are in the market for a new keeper in the near-future, Spurs especially given the recent poor form of their 36-year-old captain Hugo Lloris.

Chelsea may have other more pressing priorities but could well do with an upgrade on the underperforming Edouard Mendy and the inconsistent Kepa Arrizabalaga.

United meanwhile could soon lose veteran David de Gea who is out of contract at the end of the season, and though they are in talks with the Spaniard over a new deal, Erik ten Hag would no doubt be interested in signing a new keeper with better distribution skills.

Various names have been linked with all three clubs, and earlier in January it was reported that Tottenham were keeping tabs on Raya who has just 18 months left on his Brentford contract.

He is therefore expected to leave the Gtech Community Stadium in the summer, but according to The Telegraph, the Blues and the Red Devils are also interested in making a move for the 27-year-old.

Raya joined Brentford from Blackburn Rovers in 2019 for just £3million as has played a huge role in the Bees’ rise, winning promotion to the top-flight in 2021.

This season, he has been one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers, keeping six clean sheets so far – only Newcastle’s Nick Pope, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, De Gea and Manchester City’s Ederson have more.

His efforts has helped Brentford to an unprecedented eighth in the table and earned him a place in Spain’s World Cup squad ahead of De Gea.

While Bees boss Thomas Frank has claimed that his star player will not be sold in January, Raya recently hinted that he was open to leaving, telling AS: ‘Every player has goals and wants to improve.

‘Now I am focused on my team and in the summer, we will see what happens. If they want to do business, they will have to do it but there is a long season left and I am only focused on doing it well.

‘In the summer, we will assess my situation.’

Currently valued at around £20million, Raya will next be in action when Brentford travel to Leeds on Sunday.
