This drama won’t end!
#EnvelopeGate continues with more explanations as to exactly what went wrong during the Best Picture announcement at the 89th annual Oscars Sunday night in Los Angeles.
At this point we all know Warren Beatty was handed the wrong envelope (the Best Actress one to be exact) and that Faye Dunaway mistakenly called out La La Land as the winner.
Well, the reason for that is because there were two Best Actress envelopes. One was in Emma Stone‘s possession, while the other was mistakenly given to Mr. Beatty.
PricewaterCoopers, the accounting firm that oversees the envelopes, now explains that two of their reps, Martha Ruiz and Brian Cullinan, were stationed on both sides of the stage. Both also had their own briefcase containing envelopes of all the winners.
Ruiz handed off the Best Actress envelope when it was time to announce the award, the penultimate of the night, and then immediately following that, when Best Picture was about to be announced, Cullinan also handed off his duplicate of the Best Actress envelope. OOPS!!!
Another explanation also lies in the fact that the envelope design had been changed this year from red on gold to gold on red, making the writing on the envelopes more difficult to read. So. Much. Dramz.
“The envelopes containing the winner’s names were redesigned this year, and they featured red paper with gold lettering that specifies the award. Last year’s envelopes featured gold paper and red lettering, which may have been more legible. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, not PricewaterhouseCoopers, is responsible for the design and procurement of the envelopes.”
The plot thickens when it’s been revealed that Cullinan was tweeting and taking photos of the night the entire time, when really he should have been paying more attention to his work!
Whatever the reason, this drama will be talked about and talked about, and the moment watched again and again, for a very long time.
But you know what? We still blame Steve Harvey. LOLz!
